Corrosion Resistance Properties Of Nickel-based Alloy Materials

Jul 02, 2025

The corrosion resistance of nickel-based alloys varies depending on their type and the medium they are used in.

1.Pure Nickel(Nickel 201/Nickel 200)
Application fields:
Resistant to alkaline media (such as sodium hydroxide);
Resistant to neutral or weakly acidic salt solutions, fresh water, seawater;
Not resistant to strong oxidizing acids (such as concentrated sulfuric acid, nitric acid).
Corrosion grade: In most mild environments, it is "excellent" (corrosion rate < 0.1 millimeters per year).

2. Nickel-Copper Alloy (Monel 400/Monel K-500)
Application fields:
Resistant to seawater, hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid, organic acids;
Resistant to chloride stress corrosion (better than stainless steel);
Not resistant to strong oxidizing environments and high-temperature hydrogen sulfide.
Corrosion grade: "Excellent" (very low corrosion rate) in marine and chemical environments.

3. Nickel-Chromium Alloy (Inconel 600/Inconel 625)
Application fields:
Resistant to high-temperature oxidation, nitric acid, organic acids, and chloride stress corrosion;
Suitable for alternating oxidizing-reducing environments.
Corrosion grade: "Excellent" in high-temperature and harsh chemical environments (corrosion rate < 0.05 mm/year).

4. Nickel-Molybdenum Alloy (Hastelloy B/Hastelloy B-2)
Application fields:
Resistant to hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, etc. (non-oxidizing acids);
Not resistant to media containing oxidants (such as Fe³⁺, Cu²⁺).
Corrosion grade: "Excellent" in reducing acids (almost no corrosion)

5. Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum Alloy (Hastelloy C-276/C-22)
Application fields:
Resistant to oxidizing acids (nitric acid, mixed acid), chloride, and moist chlorine gas;
Extremely strong resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
Corrosion grade: "Top" in mixed acids and harsh industrial environments (corrosion rate can be ignored)

The actual usage needs to be evaluated based on the environment, temperature, product concentration and oxidation-reduction performance;
In environments with sulfur or high stress, special designs are required (such as adding tungsten, copper, etc.);
If you need to recommend nickel-based alloys for specific environments, please provide detailed conditions (such as medium pH, oxidation-reduction performance, pollutants, etc.).
