Common Solid Solution Strengthening Elements
Feb 17, 2026
Here are some common solid solution strengthening elements and the main reasons for their strengthening:
|
Cobalt |
The atomic radius of cobalt is not much different from that of nickel. Therefore, adding cobalt to the alloy mainly increases the probability of layer slip, thereby achieving the effect of solid solution strengthening. |
|
Cobalt |
The main factor for the solid solution strengthening of iron lies in the difference in radius between iron and nickel atoms. However, this strengthening effect is not as obvious as that of other elements. Adding more iron to the alloy can still reduce costs. |
|
Chromium |
The main function of chromium in high-temperature alloys is to enhance the corrosion resistance of the alloys. In terms of mechanical properties, chromium causes dislocation phenomena. Additionally, when the chromium content is between 20% and 25%, it can produce the effect of short-range ordered strengthening. |
|
Tungsten |
The atomic radius of tungsten is extremely large, which is the main reason why it can enhance the alloy. At the same time, tungsten also exhibits layer slip phenomenon. |
|
Molybdenum |
The atomic radius of molybdenum is also very large, which enables it to be added to alloys, effectively preventing the occurrence of dislocation phenomena and enhancing the interaction force between atoms. At the same time, molybdenum can also refine the grains of austenite, which can also improve the strength of the alloy. |
|
Niobium |
The atomic radius of niobium is larger than that of molybdenum and tungsten, and it also exhibits excellent solid solution strengthening effect. However, in general, niobium is more often used in the precipitation strengthening mechanism. |
|
Tantalum |
Tantalum, like niobium, has a relatively large atomic radius, but it is mainly used for precipitation strengthening. Moreover, the price of this element is very high, and its usage is usually also controlled. |
|
Vanadium |
The atomic radius of vanadium is larger than that of nickel. This can refine the grains and enhance the strength of the alloy. |
